Dr Roy joined Chambers in 2022 and completed her pupillage in June 2023. She has acted in several different matters in the County Courts, Family Courts, Magistrates and the High Court.
Dr Roy's main area of practice is currently family law. She has already gained significant experience in this area, notably in care proceedings, where she has acted for parents, Local Authorities and Children's Guardians. She has also dealt extensively with cases of domestic violence, child arrangements orders and financial remedies. Dr Roy's substantial experience as a doctor has already put her in high demand for cases where there are medical elements, for example where non-accidental injuries and psychological issues are involved, as well as cases where applications for deprivation of liberty are pursued. She is also highly experienced in dealing with vulnerable clients and highly emotive cases, where her background in medicine, specifically general practice, has proven to be of great benefit.
She has also undertaken a number of civil cases including housing, infant settlements, winding up petitions, plevins, consumer credit act, fast track trials and personal injury.
Prior to her career at the Bar, Dr Roy practised and still continues to practise, as a medical Doctor. It is her intention to utilise this considerable experience to build a practice in clinical negligence, Court of Protection, mental health and inquest cases, where her substantial knowledge of the underlying issues will place her at a major advantage in providing legal advice supported by extensive medical knowledge and experience.
She studied at the Royal Free and University College Medical School London, where she obtained degrees in both Medicine and Primary Care.
She relocated to the North East in 2008 and has practised Medicine since. She has a wide breadth of experience and many qualifications over several different clinical disciplines; these include hospital medicine, primary care, tropical medicine, clinical commissioning and legal medicine. She completed General Practice training in 2015 and still remains on the medical register, undertaking locums in order to maintain her clinical interest.
Dr Roy began her transfer to the legal field in 2018. She was awarded the major Harmsworth scholarship at Middle Temple, obtained the Graduate Diploma in Law with a Commendation and completed her Bar studies with Distinction, whilst simultaneously working as a Doctor during the Covid-19 pandemic and raising a young family.
Dr Roy has a pragmatic, empathic but firm approach to her clients. She is adept at managing emotive cases, whilst simultaneously providing realistic recommendations.
In her spare time Dr Roy is also a keen semi-professional musician, having attained ABRSM Grade 8 in four instruments by the age of fifteen.
